AHWAZ, IRAN: Al Sadd coach Lhoussaine Ammouta chose to applaud hosts Foolad Khouzestan’s passionate support following his side’s goalless draw at Ghadir Stadium in the AFC Champions League Group C opener on Wednesday.

Just under 38,000 fans were in attendance creating a raucous noise despite the tightly-fought nature of the tie that resulted in precious few opportunities created by either side.

Khouzestan were reduced to 10 men in the second half after Mehdi Badrloo was sent-off following a late challenge on former AFC Player of the Year Khalfan Ibrahim, but Ammouta was still content with his side’s performance in gaining a draw in what was an intimidating atmosphere in Ahwaz.

“I would like to congratulate Foolad Khouzestan and their fans. This was a tough match for both sides and I believe the fans enjoyed it,” said Al Sadd coach Ammouta.

“Both teams had good goal scoring opportunities, however, we had the chance to take the three points but my players squandered their chances away. In the end, I’m satisfied with a draw in Ahwaz in front of these enthusiastic fans.

“We are a professional team and the fans couldn’t affect our performance, but I have to highlight the fans here as they are unique. I would like to thank Khouzestan for their wonderful hosting and the fans who cheered up both teams.”
